SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIP.
(per press association.) Wanganui, February 25. The Australasian Swimming Championship Mee'ing commenced to-day. The weather was fine save for a few showers. The sport was excellent and there was great interest in the appearance of the Australian champions. The results of the principal events are: —100 yds Maiden Hd'cp— E W Johnson (Collegiate School), scr, 1 ; A Pownall (Wanganui), 2 sees, 2 ; J L Astley (T YMT) 3. 220 yds Cham pionship of Australasia— Lane (NSW) 1 ; Gailey (Queensland) 2, Gailey finished 11 sees behind Lane. Time 2mm 38 sees. Lane's previous Aus tralasian record was 2 mm 38 ls-5 sees at Sydney on March 4th, 1901, Champion (Wellington) was the only other starter, 75 yds Hd'cp (open) — Final heat, Gailey (Queensland) 1 ; Hunter (Hawera) 2 j Aitken (Wanganui) 3. A good race. Time 55 1-5. 880 yds Championship of Australasia — Cavill 1, Re_d 2. Time Ist, 11 mm Bsecs ; 3rd 11 mm 15 sees. Cavill 's previous record was 11 mm 51 1-5 sec. Haywood (Wanganui) also started but gave up. Cavill also won the neatest header.
