Excellent weather prevailed for shooting yesterday afternoon, when the New Zealand clay-bird shooting championship took plaVe. The event attracted 54 competitors, including expert shots from all parts of the Dominion. The -match was fired from the 18 yards mark. E. 11. King (Tauranga) and I). Fraser (Napier) tied in the final, with the possible of 21 birds, each. They divided the prize money for first place, and shot off ;for the title., the diamond medal, and the Ammunition Company's gun. King, in the shoot-off, got' his third bird, and Fraser lost his third. Hughes (.Auckland) and Jensen (Carterton). with 20 birds each, came next, and took 72k each. E. R. King previously won the championship in 1912. Last year A. Gardener (Invercargill) was the winner. PAYING THE PENALTY. Christchurch, April 20. fn the Court to-day, on charges of betting. John Shanaglian was fined C 25 and costs, Walter Gooseman (for betting in a hotel) £50 and costs, and William Boon (betting at Riccarton), -•L;jO and costs. A SLANDER ACTION. Hawera, April 20. The M-igistraU-'s Court to-day is occupied with a case believed to'bo the first of its kind-Carroll v. Gardenin which the plaintiff, a married ivoniiin, sues for £100 for slander on her chastity. The statements forming the ground of action are alleged to have been made by the defendant, a church elder, to a minister, to a constable, to plaintiff's husband, and to another man. The case is unfinished.
