Some Other Remarks
In AVellington yesterday the heaviest polling on record resulted at tho municipal elections. As was to be expected, Mayor David McLaren, the Labourite, was defeated by ex-Cr. John P. Luke. How strenuous was the contest is indicated by the figures, Air Luke scoring 9994 and Mr McLaren 9486. AVc congratulate Air Luke upon tlie well-deserved call to "come up higher," and feel sure lawill make a good Mayor. Party made its first big concentrated effort to capture everything, and, as we anticipated, was snowed under. In fact, it lost what little it had previously held. Palmesrton also had an exciting time yesterday, and the Progressive Party succeeded in capturing the Council with its ticket. The electors were very emphatic about the matter, turning down the Independents. Those who went under in this notable struggle were such old identities in municipal life as Messrs Clausen, AVollerman, and S. Abrahams (an ex-Mayor). The other defeated men were Messrs M. A. Eliott, C. F. Spooner, and H. M. Haycock. Amongst the victors were Messrs H. It. AVoon and E. H. Crabb (late of Kimbolton). Over in Hawke's Bay the Hon. J. D. Ormond was defeated in the Harbour oßard election. Yesterday was a great time, indeed. And now, let's get to business, gentlemen.
