Profiting by the lessons of the Titanic catastrophe, one of the Japanese shipping companies, the Toyo Kisen Kaisha, has just introduced a new feature. Each person who books a -assage by any of the company's steamers avill find attached to his ticket a coupon, which is good for a certain seat in a specified lifeboat. On each of these coupons is printed a request that passengers, upon joining their ship, should acquaint themselves with tbe exact location of the lifeboat in which they would have to take their seats in case of emergency. The company is taking the further precaution of seeing that each ship is provided with a supply of lifebelts sufficient for the full number of passengers it is entitled to carry. THE ROSENTHAL MURDER. LIEUT. BECKER ON TRIAL. EYE-WITNESSES DESCRIBE THE SHOOTING. A COLD-BLOODED CRIME. New York, October 18. The trial of ex-Police Lieut. Becker who stands charged with the murder of Herman Rosenthal, who was lured from the Metropole Hotel , at 2 o'clock on the morning of July I 15, and shot dead by several men in. j a motor car, is now fairly under way. i Louis Kraus, an eye-witness of the shootino- described how the murder was committed. He said that Rosenthal was shot on a signal from one of the conspirators. A man walked out of the Metropole and raised his hands to the level of his eyes. Shots were thereupon fired, and Rosenthal, who had just emerged from the hotel, fell on the pavement. Kraus identified "Lefty Louie," "Gyp the Blood," and "Whitey" Lewis as three of the men who were present at the time of the shooting. Another man who witnessed the murder, John Standish, swore that it was "Whitey" Lewis who fired the shot that killed Rosenthal. Thomas Ryan, a taxi-cab driver, testified that only one man did the shooting thus contradicting the evidence of Kraus that several shots were simultaneously fired by at least three persons. A report was current in the courtroom that "Lefty Louie" and Frank' Cirofici, otherwise "Dago Frank," were ready to make confessions. MARCONI COMPANY. ALLEGED TRAFFIC IN SHARES. In the House o,f Commons this evening the Postmaster-General, Mr Samuel, tabled a motion for the appointment of a committee to investigate the circumstances attending the -Mt-rconi Company's agreement in correction with the establishment of Imperial wireless stations. The Postmaster-General, the Attor-roy-General (Sir Ri'fus Isaacs), and tie Chancellor of ti.c Exchequer (Mr Lloyd George) indignantly repudiated the charge that there had.been traffic in tKe company's shares. Lord Hugh Cecil said he was convinced that the charges were nothing but the malignant growth of diseased imagination. The motion was adopted. CHURCHILL'S SHILLELAGH. WEAPON FOR HOME RULE FIGHT. GIFT FROM ULSTER LIBERALS. London, October 18. Representatives of the Ulster Liberals went to the Admiralty today and presented Mr Winston Churchill with a blackthorn stick, which, they explained, was to enable him lo meet Sir Edward Carson on equal terras in the Home Rule fight. A blackthorn was presented to Mrs Chui chill also During his recent visit to Portadown, in Ulster, Sir Edward Carson was presented with a true Irish blackthorn shillelagh decorated with orange and purple ribbons. Mr Edward Stotesbury, head of the baniung firm of Drexel and Co., in his | evidence to-day before the Senate Commitee on campaign contributions, said that he raised £33,159 for the Republican campaign on behalf of Mr Roosevelt in 1904. He had raised about £20,000 when President Ta-ft was the party's nominee in 1908, and £5000 for the present Republican campaign.
