ANNUAL SCHOOL PICNIC,

TUere glorious weatuer for the annual school picnic at AYaiata, which was held in the school grounds yesterday, when there was a large assemblage of both children and adults. Shortly alter noon the School .Committee (with ilr Anderson, the"'energetic chairman) and the assistance of .Mr Hurre, the teacher, were busy getting off races and other contests, games, etc. Refreshments were provided m ample quantity by the ladies of the district, and, were done full justice to. At 3 o'clock, the presentation of prizes took place, Mr Fred Priani apologised for the absence of Mr D. H. Uuthrie, M.P.. who had to go to Wellington on urgent public business. Mr Pirani delivered a short J address upon the advantages of education and the difficulties of managing the country schools with- the small .funds at the Board's disposal. Be expressed his pleasure at being able to meet -them again at a school at which lie 'had been present as 'a young man when it was opened. Books were then given to all the school children who had attended the school last year, according to the positions they held in the classes. For general excellence prizes were presented by Mrs and Miss Balmer,. Mavis Balmer, St. V., winning the prize for girls, and Victor Lawrence, St. VI., the prize for hoys. The same donors presented sewing prizes, Mabel Balmer winning the senior prize, and Jessie Viles for the juniors. The committee also presented a. special prize to a daughter of Mr Viles, who was an invalid, and did her school work :vti home. The fuiiotiou concluded with cheers for the committee, the donors of special prizes, the headmaster, and Mr Pirani, after Mr Anderson had thanUed the latter for the interest he had always taken in the school and for his attendance that day.
