Professor Lexer, of Jena University, at a conference of German surgeons, detailed the construction of an entirely new oesophagus (the gullet through which food and drink pass to the stomach), out of intestines, the outer skin being grafted. The organ had been destroyed by sulphuric acid, whicli a woman had taken when attempting to commit suicide. The burns ha dreached from the pharynx (the muscular sac of the cavity of the mouth) to the stomach. The* woman is now taking solids and fluids.
