Owing to the scarcity of Water for hvdraufic mining in the KlondyKe district, the Government of Yukon Territory and a number of the largest mine owners and operators mad© a contract with M«C. M. Hatfield, of Los Angeles, who had matie. many "rain-making" experiments in the arid parts of California. If he produced "a'sufficient rainfall to ensure as far as ample rainfall would, a successful and prosperous summer in the placer mining industry, the fact to be determined by a board representing the various parties to the contract, he was to receive 5000 dollars from thejGoveiDment and 5000 dollars from the miners; otherwise, he was to i«cei/e the travelling and hviug expenses of himself and his assistant. The Commissioner administering the territory now reports that Mr Hadnold commenced his demonstrations on June llth, on * togi eminence called the "Dome," -about thirty miles from Datfson. On Hunker, Sulphur, Gold Run, and Deminion Creeks the rainfall for June was about the average; hut on tfonansa and Bldorada it was v below normal. During the early part Hi July there was no increase over the average of former years. , Accordingly, at a mating of the aforesaid Board, held at Dawson on July 33rd,. it wae decided that "in the opinion of this committee the contract entered into on July 10th, 1905, has not been carried out, and that Mr Hadfield > notified that his contract is terminated." A copy of «"s decision was immediately sent to Mr Hadfield, who thereupon desisted from further experiments."
