POLICE COURT.

♦ Mr Jas. Barton and R. Burne, J.'sP., were on the Bench at the Feilding Court this morning. Richard Bowler was charged that, by excessive drinking of intoxicating liquors, he mis-spent and wasted his estate, and injured his health. , Plea, not guilty. Bowler was defended by Mr Carty. Mrs Bowler deposed that her husband had been drinking the whole of this week. By Mr Carty: My husband had been ill about six months ago, and had to see a doctor. Constable Henderson gave evidence as to the good character, sobriety, and hard working habits of Bowler; only saw him drunk once, 12 months ago. The Bench stated that, after mature consideration, they nad decided to grant the order. Mr Carty said he desired to call defendant. Richard Bowler deposed that he had given his wife about £70 in the last six months. He had to spend money in the hotels, because he aid a lot of business with them. He was getting, richer every day; his debts were about £10, and there was owing to him £100. Order granted. . Defendant left the Court stating he would leave the country at onee — he would not stay in it another five minutes. Joseph Samuel Fowlee was called on a similar charge^ Sergt. Bowden gate evidence to the effect thafe- Fowles was a man who loafed aßout the hotels waiting for people to buy him liqttor. John Stringer, on a similar charge, had an order taken out against him, the Bench remarking that his sort were the greatest enemies the hotelkeepers had. . - John Wilkinson, pleading guilty to the same charge, had an order granted against him. Frank Melshorn . was. charged .with having his chimney on fire. He explained that he had only just come to Feilding, and had not properly examined the house. The Bench considered the explanation satisfactory, and decided not to inflict a fine.
