Napier, April 27. At the annual meeting of the Starr-Bowkett Society it was shown that the total loss through the late secretary's defalcations amounted to £718, which has been reduced to £218 by the payment of a fidelity bond. Mr Boucher, the Government pomologist, sajrs there is no need for alarm re the fruit-fly, and the Department hop«j"to have the pest absolutely exterminated before the next fruit season. Ashburton, Saturday. Robert Clarke, of Tinwald, has sold his Clydesdale entire to F. A. Bremer of Hawera, for 800 guineas. Taihape, Saturday. Old residents in the vicinity of Ruapehu are not in the least exercised over the supposed trouble on Mt. Ruapehu, and Mr Peters, a resident at Waioru, says that when the district was isolated little or no attention was given to such indications of activity as reported last week. Now the population is increasing it is natural these indications of activity should excite alarm. The scare, he alleges, is without justification. He visited the crater lake some time ago and is satisfied that a mild eruption had taken places. In confirmation of that opinion he saw ashes a few days go low down on the southern side of the mountain. It is a fact that the mountain is always snow-capped, and ash deposited over the white mantle makes th change all the more conspicuous and caused the sensational rumors. Bad weather deterred him from making further investigations, and he retreated. From the observations gained the gentleman in question is satisfied that no disturbance of a serious nature have occurred of either a volcanic or a thermal nature. The colony can rest in peace that old Ruapehu's belchings are of the mildest nature. Those who made the ascent with Mr Peters were Dr Patterson, and Mr A. Peterson, of the Government Life Insurance Department. Thames, April 27. The Hon. J. McGowan arrived at the Thames to-day, and received a deputation from the Drainage Board with reference to the management supervision. He proceeds to Coromandel, where he attends the Hospital Sunday demonstration to-mor-row, and visits various parts of the electorate. He will be banqueted at the Thames on Friday. Mr Millar will also 'be present. Several matters of importance are to be brought under the notice of the Minister of Marine: fi\rme-jki.iu,MHi m» r win
