CLOSING ON CESENA
ALLIED TROOPS IN ITALY
Rec. 11 a.m. •LONDON, October 18. Indian and Canadian troops in Italy are closing in against Cesena, on the Rimini-Bologna road, where the Germans formerly had their headquarters, says Reuters correspondent in Italy. Punjabis and Canadians are both two miles outside the town.
Empire, troops north-west of Cesena who reached the Pisciatello River have cleared Bulgarno, as well as several other places.
Mountain'troops of the Eighth Army made substantial advances in the mountains cv both sides of the Saveo River, despite stiff resistance from German rearguards. Several villages and dominating hills in this sector have been cleared.
In the central sector American troops of the Fifth Army made further gains in the drive against Bologna m a day of intense fighting. The Americans reached Monte Belmonte, v/here fierce fighting continues. Great concentrations of German artillery are now supporting frequent German counter-attacks against the Fifth Army, now about nine miles from Bologna, says Reuters correspondent at Allied headquarters. The Germans fired 1000 rounds in a single period of 12 hours. Mustangs replied "by divebombmg German hill positions south of Bologna.
