FUTURE OF THE PACIFIC
"There is a real danger that when the pressure of the war is relaxed the ideals proclaimed and, the promises made in time of danger may be too tasily forgotten." said Archbishop West-Watson, Pi-imate of New Zealand, in an address to the Anglican Synod in Christchurch, reports the "Press." "We want to see our own country brought more and more into line with Christian Order: we want to see it discharging its Christian responsibilities towards the countries which are destitute. ... We have a deep responsibility towards the islands of the Pacific, especially 'to those under our own mandate. We do not wish to see them rewarded for their comradeship and constancy simply by the old gospel of work under white supervision, better organised and administered than before, ! but still more for the benefit of the ! white man than for their-own. Somehow we must' find a way to develop all that is good in their own way of life, and to lead them on to a new order. The pressure of commercial i interests will be great, and if they are to be subordinated to the interests of the islanders, there will be need for , close and sympathetic co-operation between the churches and the administration." .
