DRIVER CONVICTED
BUS COLLISION WITH TRUCK
On July 19 a collision occurred between a railway bus and a truck at the north approach to the Randwick Road ramp, Lower Hutt. Twelve persons were injured, one of whom, the driver of the truck, is still in hospital. Yesterday,, the driver of the bus, William Arthur Cooper, was charged before Mr. A. E. Dobbie, S.M., at Lower Hutt, with negligent driving. Senior-Sergeant Susrue prosecuted and Mr. E. F. Rothwell appeared for Cooper. The charge was that in making the turn on to the ramp the defendant m^£ eJ: 00 Wlde a sweep and collided with the truck, which was approaching down the ramp. " The defence was that the long wheelbase of the bus made it necessary to make a wide turn, and that the final cause of the accident was that the sudden application of the brakes/which did not grip each wheel evenly/caused the bus to lurch to the right and col-f lide with the truck.
The defendant was convicted and fined £3 and costs. ■ ■ -
