TRENTHAM FINALS

LITTLE FAST WORK

REPRESENTATIVE INJURED

Conditions could hardly have been worse at Trentham this morning when horses engaged on the opening day of the Wellington Spring Meeting were due to have their final gallops. Heavy rain fell throughout the operations and the tracks were soon carrying a good deal of surface water. Even if the weather improves the1 course proper will be heavy on Saturday. No. 1 grass was available for the older horses, but trainers of two-year-olds could give their charges a run down the straight on the outside of the course proper. However, fast work was weil-nigh impossible, and the times were far from illuminating. Hormuz finished a shade ahead of Tuis at the end of half a mile, which occupied 54sec, and this was bettered in only one or two instances later in the proceedings, when the going had become very cut about. Although restricted to a sprint in, Foxcatcher was handling the heavy ground in good style, and Jenny's Girl and Court Judge were going better than Allisloper and Sunstream at the close of their task. They were not timed.

Desert Ace was going as well as Dark Morning at the close of six furlongs, the last half-mile taking 55sec. Jumping away from the six-furlong post, Bridge Acre picked up Hine Rei before the four-furlong peg was reached, and they came home from that point in 55sec. Ramicourt ran his first three furlongs in 45sec, and after being eased in the middle stages completed seven furlongs in 1.49. • He looks well. Ann Bank, a very long-striding filly, was clear of Moutoa Lad at the end of half a mile in 52£ sec. Siglow, a free goer, covered seven furlongs in 1.46 1-5, the first three in 44 4-ssec.

Yogi struck out freely in a severifurlong task, which he completed in 1.39. His stable-mate, Kol Kagi, was speeded up in the run home of his restricted task.

Although Transmitter secured a break of several lengths, Tara King was with the Vaals gelding on straightening up and was doing it easily at the post, running the halfmile in better than 54sec. Capronella and Joseph Conrad were clear of Daniel Haig at the end of six furlongs in 1.23 2-5, the first two furlongs in 28|sec. Only one of the first-named pair will represent the stable on the opening day, and A. Jenkins will ride whichever runs. Silver Coin and Singing Hills required 1.25£ for six furlongs, the first three in 45sec.

After running the first half-mile very easily, Voltaire, Flahuluk, and Bunsby kept together to come home the last half in 56sec. The state ot the ground will bring Flahuluk into favour.

Alright was very wayward going out to gallop with Da Vinci, and he finally dislodged his rider, and finished up on the plough on the other side of the rail. Da Vinci came home an easy half-mile in 58 l-ssec.

Poutatau, a mud-lark, showed his appreciation by registering 53 4-ssec for his half-mile. However, he may be the better for a race. Whackie, who followed him, was restricted to three-quarter pace, recording 61sec foi his half-mile.

1 Typhoon and Casilda came home from the half-mile post in 58sec, the initial furlong taking 14 l-ssec. Golden Souvenir and Matador, both of whom are Guineas' candidates, took 58sec for their half-mile, Golden Souvenir holding a slight advantage at the post.

Among the two-year-olds to run down the straight were Behave and Al-Sirat, Diatomous Girl and Sailor's Lass, Iron Duke and Sports Suit. Gaystock and Lady Scholar, who had worked early, sprinted home on the two-year-old track.

Among yesterday's arrivals were Kindergarten, Amorlad, Air Ace, Deep Harmony, Belle Leonne, Vafort, Lord Roland, Foxhaven, Chicago, Kevin, Beau Cheval, Pensacola, Piccolo, John Gay, Irish Note, Debater, Honest Sal, Maggiore, The Vulture, Kiloney, Al' bino, Gold Spur, Grey Salute, Mr. Rosa, and Gulf Stream. The last, named, who is a double acceptor, is expected to contest the Shorts Handicap in preference to the Wainui Handicap.

Representative and Lou Rosa arrived from Auckland, but the former was unfortunate enough to meet with an injury on the trip, and whether he will fulfil his engagement in the Wellington Handicap is meantime doubtful.

Additional scratchings announced are.—Battledress (all engagements), 11.35 a.m. yesterday; Erin's Pal (Weilesley Stakes), 2.15 p.m. yesterday; Douglas Haig (all engagements), 4.30 pjn. yesterday.
