YAP NEUTRALISED
RECENT RAIDS UNOPPOSED SYDNEY, August 8. The Japanese killed in the little-publicised-fighting in the Sarmi-Maffin Bay area of Dutch New Guinea now number 3257. Only 64 prisoners of war have been taken.
On the Aitape sector of British New Guinea, the American counterenveloping force which severed the Japanese supply line from Wewak, is now advancing west of/ Afua, the scene of recent enemy suicidal attacks. South'-west Pacific Liberators which bombed the important Japanese base of Yap, in the western Carolines, again encountered no fighter opposition. Yap appears to have been neutralised.
In the Banda Sea, Dutch-manned Mitchells on Sunday sank a 1500-ton freighter-transport.
