MENTION IN DISPATCHES
Advice has been received by the Minister of Defence (Mr. Jones) from the Admiralty that the King has approved of the award of Mention in Dispatches to the following officers for good service in attacks on Salerno:— Temporary Sub-Lieutenant Maurice Arthur Ballinger, R.N.Z.N.V.R. Temporary Sub-Lieutenant Lester Samuel Holmes-Edge, R.N.Z.N.V.R. Sub-Lieutenant Ballinger joined the Royal New Zealand Navy under scheme B as an ordinary seaman on August 28, 1941. After training in the United Kingdom he was prompted to temporary sub-lieutenant, R.N.Z.N.V.R., on September 18, 1942. He was born on March 22, 1919, in North Canterbury, and before joining the Navy was employed as a clerk. His father is Mr. J. H. Ballinger, Woodend, North Canterbury. Sub-Lieutenant Holmes-Edge joined the Royal New Zealand Navy as an ordinary seaman under scheme B on August 9, 1940. He trained in England and was promoted temporary sub-lieu-tenant on December 24, 1942. He was born at Dunedin on June 11, 1919, and before entry in the Navy was a civil servant. In September, 1943, he was reported seriously ill as a result of being injured in an explosion. His father is Captain F. Holmes-Edge, 44 Esplanade, Sumner,- Christchurch.
