VOTE OF £36,000

LAND COURT & COMMITTEES A vote of £36,000 for the remuneration and expenses of the Land Sales Court and the District Land Sales Committees to be- established under the terms of the new lands legislation was included in supplementary estimates of the Lands and Survey Department, passed by the House of Representatives last night. There was also a vote of £4000 to meet the salaries of 16 additional officers (ranging from £65 to £765), who will be required in connection with the administration of the new, legislation. Mr. H. G. Dickie (National, Patea) suggested that the £36,000 would be only incidental to the cost to the community of the new system. Every vendor would have to get a solicitor to assist in securing approval of a transaction before the Land Sales Committee or the Court. This was the experience with mortgagors adjustment proceedings, the expenses of which were very heavy. The Leader of the Opposition (Mr. Holland) said he had asked the Minister of Finance what the members of the Court and the committees would be paid, but all he,had got was a statement of the probable number of transfers in each district. That was not an answer and he would repeat his request for information. The Minister of Finance (Mr. Nash) replied that if he stated the probable salaries of members of the Court and Committees, he would be committing the* Government. He would not do it because the salaries would be in accordance with the qualifications of the men available.

Mr. Holland: You refuse to give the information?

The Minister: "That's bunkum to ask for it." He added that he had privately given a member of the OpDosition his idea on the subject, but Ec "was not going to commit the Government. The vote of £36,000 was for eight months' expenses and, salaries. The Judge was usually paid .£2OOO a year.

Mr. Holland: We are able to say we sought information and you refused it.

The Minister: Isn't it clever! And then to talk about co-operation. I don't think the Government ought to be committed.

The vote was adopted without division. - !
