THE MAKOGAI LEPERS

"ISLAND OF LIVING DEATH"

The humane work being done at the leper colony of Makogai, Fiji Group, by Dr. C. J. Austin, medical superintendent, and a staff of 15 European nursing sisters, is reviewed in a publication issued by the New Zealand Leper Trust Board. The publication states that through the curative qualities of chaulmoogra oil and by the devotion of the staff; Makogai has been changed from what was called "the island of living death" to a happy home for 645 sufferers. Figures quoted show that discharges during the past five ! years have exceeded 200. Gifts of money and goods from New Zealand have greatly assisted in improving the lot of the sufferers.
