Refrigerating (£1 paid), 25s 9d. HONG KONG AND SHANGHAI BANK. Preparation of a profit and loss account for the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation was not at present possible, but the balance-sheet showed that at December 31, 1942, there was £33,000,000 in cash, money at .call, and gilt-edged securities out of a balance-isheet total of £84,697,075. Assets in enemy-occupied territories and other assets unreallsable owing to the, war amounted to £41,464,171. The bank's business was in Hong Kong, Shanghai, Malaya, Burma, Java, and the Philippine Islands, all now in enemy hands. The board was unable to recommend payment of any dividend for the period- subsequent to June 30, 1941. It was in July, 1941, that the last payment, which took the form of an Interim of £2 10s, was announced. Mr. A. Morse, chairman, speaking In London, made it clear that while earning power was greatly curtailed in present conditions, he had good reason to look forward with confidence to the time when the hank would again take a prominent place in financing the requirements of the Far East. Meantime, the bank's offices operating in India and Ceylon were participating in the large volume of trade emanating from those countries.
