BRITISH SAILORS' SOCIETY
A recent outing to Day's Bay, arranged b the British Sailors' Society, was much enjoyed by visiting seamen. A hot meal, provided by the girls of the Chart and Compass Club, awaited the men on their return, and afterwards there was a social evening. On Sunday a meal was provided for a large crowd of seamen and soldiers, and an address was Riven by Mr. A. Bain, of Auckland. The society's rooms are just as popular during the week, when men can pass their spare time there playing table tennis, billiards, and other games. Country people still take an interest in the work of the society and send gifts. A piano in good condition for the use of the men would be greatly appreciated.
Mrs. Madeleine Alston was the guest speaker at a recent social afternoon at the Lyceum Club and gave interesting reminiscences of meetings with such well-known literary people as E. F Benson. Cunningham. Grahame, Be/ • nnrd Shaw, Cynthia Stockley. Marion Cran. and General Smuts. Mrs. Isabel -Bagnall recited a poem, "The Soul, of the Scot," by Rachel Annand Taylor
