LOST AFTER AIR ATTACK
LINER EMPRESS OF ASIA
LONDON, May 19.
It has been disclosed in Ottawa that the Canadian Pacific liner Empress of Asia was lost after an air attack while taking troops to Singapore during the Malayan campaign.
The vessel was attacked by Japanese dive-bombers, and had to be beached on February 5. Later she burnt out. The Empress of Asia, a vessel of 17,000 tons, which was built in 1913, was in convoy with several other troopships at the time of the attack, in company with the cruiser Exeter. One hundred seamen and most of the Imperial troops aboard were saved.
Members o£ the crew said that they owed their lives to the Australian sloop Yarra, which ran alongside the burning ship and took the men oft.
