GERMANS' BRIEF ESCAPE IN AUSTRALIA
(Rec. & a.m.) CANBERRA, May 19,
The Army Minister, Mr. F. M. Forde. announced in the House of Representatives today that the Government had suspended from .duty the camp commandant at ai* internment camp from which six German prisoners had escaped last week. All the escapees, he added, had now been recaptured.
Mr. Forde explained that the Germans had been engaged in woodcutting in the Goulburn Valley, in Victoria. He emphasised the difficulty of guarding prisoners of war when employed outside their camps. The Army opposed employment outside camps, and this case was likely to lead to a revision of that policy.
