MR. R. G. DENTON

The death occurred yesterday, of Mr. Robert George Denton, M.1.M.E., in his seventy-eighth year. Born in Wellington, he served his time in Robertson's foundry, and later went to England, where for three or four years he served with Armstrongs, Ltd. About 1888 he returned to New Zealand, and he started in business on his own account in Wellington.

He was noted for his careful training of apprentices. Among his pupils were Messrs yon Hartizsch, R. Collins, and J. Cook. In his business he was greatly interested in those who thought they had invented something new, and he spent a great deal of time in assisting such people with his advice and experience. .."':■

Mr. Denton was a prominent member of the New Zealand Alliance, and was one of those who called .the first meeting of the alliance in Wellington. He was greatly interested in the V.M.C.A. and work for young people. Until quite recentlyhe used to go into the V.M.C.A. gymnasium and lead the class in its exercises.'

His interest in youth was shown by his frequent attendance at the Wellington Technical College, and his interest in the work of the boys there.

Mrs. Denton died about two years ago, and there are two daughters, Miss Agnes Denton, superintendent of ladies' staff of the Wellington Public Library, and Mrs. T. Ward, of Marton.

There are six brothers .alive— Messrs. W. H. Den ton and P. N. Denton, of Wellington, F. Denton, of Wanganui, J. M. Denton, of -' Sheffield, England, H. Denton, of Levin, and L. A. Denton, of Hastings.
