MORE POWER GIVEN
EXPENDITURE BY AUSTRALIAN
ARMY
(Rec. 2 p.m.) SYDNEY, May 16. The Army chiefs in Australia have been given a free hand to spend sums of money on urgent war works without consulting the Federal Treasury, says the Canberra correspondent of the "Daily Telegraph." This power has been given to them by the War Cabinet.
This decision means that the army will not be hampered, as previously, by having to obtain permission before spending money on work it considered necessary- The army will be able to go straight ahead with its work, and, provided the expenditure can be justified, the War Cabinet will ratify it later. It is expected that a great amount of red tape, wasted effort, and delay will be eliminated by the new system.
