HEAVIEST OF WAR

NEW ENEMY ASSAULT

LONDON, May 15

A dispatch from an advanced base in Australia to London says that yesterday's enemy air raid on Port Moresby, the fiftieth, was the heaviest of the whole New Guinea war.

The strength of the raid indicated that the Japanese have decided to resume the use of heavy bombers as well as of scores of fighters in an attempt to neutralise this vital Allied base.

After the first attack was made by 30 Zero fighters and intercepted, one pilot was seen to parachute into the jungle. The planes which made the second attack met anti-aircraft fire which kept them so high that their bombs fell harmlessly into the water.
