MANILA TALKS HELD
COMMENT ON JAPANESE
LONDON, October 3
British and American military chiefs conferred in Manila today when Sir Robert Brooke-Popham, British Com-mander-in-Chief in the Far East, had talks with the United States commander.
Sir Robert said that the range of strategical subjects to be discussed was wide. He attributed the present lull in the Pacific to the growing belief among the Japanese that they had been double-crossed by the Axis and were in a tricky position. "We must improve our defences although they are already strong," he said, "in case the younger officers in Japan slip off the rails one day."
