MILITARY SERVICE CASES
Five men who were stated to be conscientious objectors were sentenced by Mr. J. H. Luxford. S.M., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday to one month's imprisonment for failing to report for military service after being called up. They were Ronald James Frank Armstrong, John Charles Bayly, Nathan Sidney Beatus, Francis Patterson Bell, and John Cameron. Bayly pleaded not guilty, Cameron did not plead, and , the others admitted the charge. Stating that he would hot deal with 'such cases in the absence of the aaen concerned, the Magistrate issued a warrant for the arrest of Marshall Douglas Haig Seelen, who did not appear to answer a charge of failing to report for service. Charles James Snow pleaded not guilty to a charge of failing to report, and explained that no notice to report had reached him. He had volunteered for service overseas. An Army representative said that Snow had given a lot of trouble by moving round the country without i notifying changes of address. ' The Magistrate adjourned the case for a week on tl. understanding that if Snow reported to the Army he would be convicted and discharged, and if he did not he. would be vsent to gaol for a month. v The case of Robert Duncan William McCallum, a reservist who is charged with failing to report, was further adjourned for a week, the Magistrate indicating that he would give a reserved decision then. For failing to enrol as reservists George Alexander Heatherwick (Mr W. D. Goodwin) was fined £7 f Harold James Heatherwick (Mr. Goodwin) was sentenced to five weeks' imprisonment with hard labour, and Charles [August Johansson (Mr. A. Free) was [sentenced to one month's imprisonment with hard labour. All pleaded guilty. _^
