RACE INQUIRIES

ADMISSION OF THE PRESS

The admission of newspaper report-, ers to inquiries held by trotting clubs into the conduct of races was supported at the annual meeting of the Canterbury Owners' ana Breeders' Association. The suggestion is to be referred jto the Dominion. Trotting Council, which is to be formed shortly. A speaker said that there was a general feeling that inquiries should be open to reporters. An open inquiry was a guarantee to the public that everything was "square and above board." There was an impression that the penalties imposed were not always in accordance with charges alleged against drivers, , and the newspapers provided the 6ne medium by which the public could allay their fears. The admission of reporters would ensure a general unanimity in the imposition of penalties. Publication of evidence was an advantage, as secrecy in many cases was unfair to. the man charged, the club concerned, and the public. A Serious Loss. As a result of the epidemic of strangles which has raged in Canterbury this winter, C. S. Donald has lost 16 horses. That seems an enormous; number, but the Belfast breeder must have hundreds of well-bred' horses on his property. j Ronald Logan. Ronald Logan continues to work well( at Addington and he is reported to have developed into a powerful and good-looking gelding. Unbeaten in his two starts this season the Logan Fraser gelding should add to his list of successes at the spring and summer meetings. Will Meet Again. Pacing Power and Great News will meet again in the Derby, in which Sandiways, who beat Great News easily the last time they met, will also be a contender. Southern Trip. . D. Nyhan, trainer-driver of th^e Rey de Oro—Miss Standfast gelding Gold Flight, intends taking his representative south for the New Brighton Meeting today week. Gold Flight created a good impression when he took the two-mile handicap at the recent Hutt Park Meeting, and he should carry his record further. The locally-trained representative failed away from home when taken to Nelson, but his present form, together with the benefit he has gained from the hill work he has been given, should find the chestnut pater in fine trim for his coming "engagements. The Masterton Spring Meeting acts as a fitting prelude to the Wellington fixture, for form at the one proves quite *& reliable guide to the bigger gathering. The Masterton Club has made excellent train arrangements this year, special services being run from Wellington and Palmerston North. Owners and trainers are reminded that acceptances close on Monday night at 9 o'clock. Owners and trainers are reminded that nominations for the Wellington Spring Meeting close on Monday at 5 p.m. The programme is a particularly attractive one, the inclusion of two big steeplechase events giving added interest, and it is anticipated that the list of nominations will be exceptionally large. Nominations for the Otaki meeting close at 8 o'clock the same evening. . |
