NAVAL WEDDING
REMUERA RHODES SCHOLAR
AN ENGLISH BRIDE
(0.C.) LONDON, August 19. The marriage took place recently at Woodkirk Church; near Dewsbury,. Yorkshire, of Instructor-Lieutenant George Lawrence Hogben, R.N., only son of Mr. and Mrs. Julius Hogben, of Remuera, Auckland, and Miss Margaret Elaine Carter, only child of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Carter, of West Ardsley, near Wakefield, Yorkshire. The Rev. Claude Stephenson officiated. The bride, who was given away by her father, wore an afternoon dress of deep turquoise crese trimmed With Italian quilting, and burgundy accessories. Miss Frances Clark, of Weston-super-Mare, was the only attendant, and Mr. Kit Aldred, of Beesthbrpe Hall, Caunton, Nottinghamshire,. was best man. SCHOLASTIC HONOURS. The bridegroom was a 1938 New Zealand Rhodes Scholar He had completed one year at New College, Oxford, when war broke out and he was selected for a commission in the Royal Navy. His ship took part, in the bombardment of . Genoa and later in the sinking of the. Bismarck. " ' The bride won State and county major scholarships to St.. Hilda's College, Oxford, and there read modern history $pr a B.A. honours degree. She spent a fourth year in the Oxford University Department of Education, and is teaching for the duration of the wan ■..■". ■ .. ,■ - -.-■'■ >..• •.. ■ Lieutenant and Mrs. Hogben intend to live in New Zealand after the war.
