SWING LINES

SERENADE TO SPRING

IMPORTANCE OF POCKETS

A fashion that no spring wardrobe is complete without is a smartlytailored light-weight coat. The ideal ! model is one that is as suitable when the season changes to summer as it is right now. Swing lines are the ones that prevail on the spring coat silhouette. While sports coats maintain their gay, back-swinging cuts to flatter walking in low-heeled shoes, |or "flats," as they are called, formal coats show decidedly neat, fitted lines appropriate to the more dressy shoes, frocks, and accessories with which they are worn. »BIGGER AND BETTER. On all types of coats it will be noted that pockets form an important part of the design. The slogan is for more "bigger and better" pockets, as well as those which are to Outward appearances, just letter-box slits that conform with the streamlined appearance of a slim silhouette. All-purpose coats seem

to favour big pockets which have an affinity with the bulky lines of the garment. Loose, full coats, of standing popularity because they are so wearable and comfortable over costumes, come in a fresh assortment of fabrics which include linen, velveteen, heavy checked rayon Weaves and shantung, as well as the woollens and tweeds. Among the novelty features of these coats is the new tendency towards hem-length rolled revers, bias backs seamed at the centre so that fulness falls in "funnels" and sleeves with a Mexican look achieved by wide shoulder-extension padding. Dressy coats With their defined waistline and trim fit invariably have a front tie belt. THE ILLUSTRATION. The edge-to-edge coat of the illustration is Of a lightweight wool frieze with a novel design of radiating tucks trimming the bodice. The belt and neck1 bow of self fabric give a distinctive touch. While this model has wide aggressive shoulders the tucked detail suggests a more, sloping line, thus, giving a foretaste of the natural shoulder-line which has a refreshing simplicity to eyes now used to sleeves with wide squared up tops.
