CYCLE WORKERS' DISPUTE
Assessors in the Dominion cycle workers' dispute met in conciliation council today to consider claims for a new award. Mr; S. Ritchie, Conciliation Commissioner, presided. Mr. G. T. Thurston was agent for the applicant, workers,. and Mr. W. J. Mountjoy was agent for the employers. When the luncheon adjournment was taken agreement had; been reached on the machinery clauses, leaving the question of hours of work and wages to be determined later in the sitting. The workers claimed increased rates on a weekly basis, instead of the present hourly rates, and the employers offered the current rates of pay.

"At the end of 1937.1 don't suppose we ever had a time when the prospect for secondary industries had been so good," said Mr. Bell. "There was a general belief at that time that a change of Government was possible, and that was following on top of a sharp rjse in prices after a depression, so there was virtually a boom on."
The hearing of evidence is proceeding. •
