After a brief interval .Miss Josephine and Runa set out in chase, but in the light conditions the odds were too great and the race resolved into a hard tussle between the Lois and Putorino, with Dora gradually slipping back. George Fisher at the helm of Putorino made no mistakes and maintained his lead till the finish, crossing the line 25 seconds ahead of the Lois. Dora and Miss Josephine finished at long intervals, and Tassie and Runa retired during the race.

Although they did not experience the same difficulty at Shearer's as the "fourteens," the Z class boats were becalmed for a long time further up the channel.
