PUPILS ENTERTAIN
MUSICALE AT GIRLS' COLLEGE
A musicale was presented at Wellington Girls' College yesterday afternoon by the junior and senior pupils. There was a large attendance of visitors, who were obviously much impressed with the performance.
The school orchestra, trained by the Misses E. and F. Henry, played as an overture "Pomp and Circumstance" (Elgar), and later in the programme presented a bracket of numbers, "Rustic -Dance" (Woodhouse), and "Coronach" (Earratt). The senior choir, accompanied by P. Strouts, rendered "Oh, To Be in England" (Rowley), "Russian Slumber Song" (Rebikoff), and "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" (Bach). Minuet from "Don Giovanni" (Mozart) and "Minuet" (Boccherini) were sung by the junior choir, the accompaniment being played by B. McCurdy.
The senior and junior verse-speak-ing choirs also presented several very delightful items, the former giving "Farewell," by Walter de la Mare, and "Music Comes," by John Freeman, and the latter two poems by Walter de la Mare, "Sleepyhead" and "Martha." Miss D. Symes was responsible for the training of these choirs. Forms IVB and VB sang "Shepherd's Dance" (Edward German) and "Ships of Arcady" (Michael Head).
A duet, "The Apple-woman" (Edith Blair), was given by E. and.N. Shallcrass. B. McCurdy played a piano solo, "Impromptu in A Flat" (Schubert), and violin solos, "Serenade Espagnole" (Kreisler) and "Londonderry Air" (arranged by O'Conor Morris), were played by Pauline Craig. .
It was a well-balanced, programme, and the performance reflected great credit on the girls and their teachers.
