A LEGEND.
A Maori maiden named Haki te Kura, a daughter of the chief of the pa at the mouth of the Taieri River, attempted to jump from the rocks to join her lover who was passing in a canoe when escaping from his enemies. She failed to reach the canoe and was killed. An immense number of Maori ovens were found on Maha Hill near the river.
