GUNS IN ATHENIA

AMERICAN EVIDENCE

RETURN AS RAIDER

REMARKS BY OFFICER

(By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright.)

(Received October 18, 10 a.m.)

WASHINGTON, October 17,

Mr. Gustav Anderson, travel bureau operator, who was a passenger on the Athenia, which was torpedoed off the Hebrides, has filed an affidavit at the State Department asserting that the Athenia was carrying coast defence guns to Canada and was to be fitted out as a raider for the return trip.

The assertions are based on remarks alleged to have been made by the chief officer, Mr. Copeland. The State Department has received several score of affidavits from passengers.

The Secretary of State, Mr. Hull, told Press representatives that Mr. Anderson's was the first intimation from any source that the Athenia carried guns. He promised to publish full details when the departmental inquiry was completed.
