INFANTRY IN ACTION
THE TWO GERMAN ATTACKS

LONDON, Tuesday Night
The Western Front has remained stationary throughout the day, though there has been local activity, on the whole front and at some points there have been sharp infantry engagements. This information is given by tonight's French communique, which followed that of yesterday's which gave details of two of the biggest German attacks so far. The first attack was decisively repulsed. The second attack in the afternoon was on a 20-mile front east of the Saar, and was supported by heavy artillery fire. In spite of these two attacks the French are still fighting on German soil.
It is estimated that five or six German divisions took part-
In accordance with plan, the French withdrew their first line of outposts. The . object of these outposts was simply to maintain contact with the German line. As soon as they gave the/alarm, the outposts were withdrawn, leaving behind mine fields, which must have caused heavy German losses. After going through the minefields the Germans met the first line of resistance, which is far beyond the Maginot Line and they were halted.
