IMPORT CONTROL
COMPLAINT OF CHAOS
PROPOSALS TO GOVERNMENT
Auckland commercial and farming interests are to make proposals to the Government concerning the control of imports and of overseas funds, said Mr. W. A. Boucher, of Auckland, who is president of the Bureau of Importers and managing director of Spedding, Ltd., in a statement to the "Evening Post" today. Mr. Boucher arrived from the north today on a short business visit. "A meeting was held by the Chamber of Commerce in Auckland yesterday afternoon," said Mr. Boucher, "at which it was decided that those engaged in importing and exporting, representatives of the Manufacturers' Association, the Wholesale Merchants' Association, the Employers' Association, the Farmers' Union, and of shipping and insurance interests, should join with the object of making proposals to the Government which will tend to remove the chaotic conditions that have existed for some time. "Yesterday's meeting," continued Mr. Boucher, "was the result of proposals made by the Bureau of Importers on August 24 that a 'national conference should be held to consider proposals in connection with the importing, manufacturing, and distributing businesses. It was felt by the Bureau of Importers that the problems associated with the Import Control Regulations and the Reserve Bank control of funds should be openly discussed and that recommendations should be made to the Government to assist them and the commercial community generally. The proposed conference was postponed ias the result of the outbreak of war, but it was felt by Auckland business people that some action should be taken and as a result of the meeting held yesterday representatives of the interests named are to meet again at an early date to formulate proposals to the Government. "It is felt that the proposals to be made will be helpful not only to those interests mentioned, but also to the Government. We are anxious^ to do everything possible to help," said Mr. Boucher. He said that constructive proposals would be made and he hoped the Government would consider them, j
