FIGURES RISING
Returns of Social Security benefits for the past four months, as published in the Abstract of Statistics, show steady increases as follows: — Unemploy- Emer--1939. ment. Sickness. gency. May 5565 1201 400 June 7036 1519 4TO July 8009 2443 633 August 8066 2630 T3O There has been paid out during the five months ended August, 1939, the following principal sums:— & Age 2.597,013 Widows 310,442 Invalidity 378,101 Unemployment 205,523 The payment for unemployment is for 21 weeks ended August 26, 1939. Other payments are war pensions, £652,998, excluding £55,000 paid in sterling through the High Commissioner in London. Payments in New Zealand also include benefits to Maori and South African War Veterans, totalling £1351, family, orphans', hospital, and maternity allowances. A sum of £75,003 is set down as for war veterans' allowances.
