COUNCIL'S REPORT

A membership of 328 clubs as against 315, 300, and 280 in the three preceding years is revealed in the annual report of the council of the New Zealand Golf Association, to be presented at the annual meeting of the association on November 16. During the year 24 clubs joined the association, and 11 resigned.

The total revenue • for the year amounted to £2294 9s 6d, and the expenditure totalled £1728 17s. An amount of £500, contributed to the New Zealand greens research committee, was included in the latter amount. The net balance of £565 12s 6d had been transferred as follows:—To a reserve for special purposes, £550, and £15 12s 6d to the accumulated fund, bringing the latter to £1744 13s Id. At the end of the association's financial year there was a balance of £1350 in the Post Office Savings Bank, an amount of £1000 on deposit at the National Bank of New Zealand, Limited, and cash at the latter bank, £13 0S lOd- x „ x «. The total amount granted to the committee for its work this year was £500, being a decrease of £80 on the amount contributed last year. Affiliated clubs continued to- derive inestimable benefit from the excellent work which the committee was carrying on in Palmerston North. A number of clubs had written to the association expressing the keenest appreciation of the very helpful advice and assistance rendered by the advisory officer, Mr. W. M. Hortori. J. A. Clements was re-engaged to tour the clubs in the South Island and John Watt was engaged to coach the clubs in the North Island and northern portion of the South Island. This was Watt's first experience as a travelling professional and several letters of appreciation of his services were received from clubs which he visited. A total of 24 visits were made to clubs by the professionals. The allocation of standard scratch scores was still being continued, and up to September 4 302 clubs had had standard scratch scores allotted.

Members of the advisory committees in Auckland, Christchurch, and Dunedin had been of great assistance to the council during the year, and its thanks were, extended to them for the valuable work they had done.
