BELOW FREEZING POINT
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH. July 9. Unprecedentedly heavy snow on the high country east of Stratford on Saturday and the fifth successive day of snowfalls in the still atmosphere on Mount Egmont today, characterised one of the coldest weekends Taranaki has experienced for years. Practically no snow has melted from round the mountain houses, where it is inches thick since the first heavy fall on Wednesday and the temperatures have been correspondingly low throughout the province, and at New Plymouth it^ was below freezing point this morning A thin film of ice practically stopped motor traffic on the north Egmont road today: M-my of the cars which reached the hostel had to be man-handled over the slippery section.
