FRANCE IN SYRIA
CHANGE RECEIVED CALMLY
(Received July 10. 9.50 a.m.)
DAMASCUS, July 9,
The Syrian Parliament, the lastj vestige of united and independent Syria, vanished today, when France took over the full control of the Levantine State after endeavouring fpr five months to reconcile the Nationalist Party to the principle of partial independence. The High Commissioner, M. bPuaux, has replaced the Parliament by a council of directors which is directly; ' answerable to him. Troops stood by, but the new order . was received calmly.
The Syrian Government headed by Jamil Mardam Bek resigned on February 18 mainly because of the decision of France not to ratify in the meantime the Franco-Syrian Treaty providing for the complete independence of Syria in 1940. A new Cabinet was formed on February 23 under Lufti Haffar and its policy was understood to be to co-operate with the French authorities until the problem of the ratification of the treaty had been solved.
