"SILENT DIVISION"
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —I notice that my friend Mr. J. A. Lee has quoted my "Silent Division" in such a fashion as might possibly convey the impression that I was supporting the present recruiting campaign. I should like to point out that this is not so. The great wave of enthusiastic volunteers that thronged the camps in the early days of the war knew nothing of the futility of war. The whole thesis of my book is that the war was a tragic waste of splendid valour, and that we should go by wise and noble ways to build the peace of the world.—l am, etc.,
O. E. BURTON, The Parsonage, Webb Street.
