BUT STILL COLD

Special forecast for Wellington:— Light to moderate and variable winds, later tending northerly. Weather fair to fine, with cold temperatures and sharp frosts tonight, but milder tomorrow. The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today for the ensuing twenty-four hours, is for light to moderate and variable winds. South-westerlies will predominate and freshen at times on the East Coast, but a change to northwesterlies will gradually advance from the south. There will be further isolated showers along the East Coast and in the far north and south, but otherwise the weather will be fair to fine. Temperatures during the day will be somewhat milder, but the night will be cold with many sharp frosts. Conditions in Westland and in the far south will later become unsettled. Pressure rose slowly over the Dominion during the weekend with the advance of an anticyclone from the Tasman Sea. Southerly winds therefore prevailed. These were mainly light to moderate in western districts, while in eastern districts they were fresh to strong, gale force being reached m many places. About Westland and Taranaki the weather was fair to fine with cold temperatures. Elsewhere it was changeable and showery, with hail and snow in man/ places and with very cold temperatures. There were heavy falls of rain on Sunday in the southern portion of the North Island, Foxton reporting 101 points, Cape Palliser 77, and Castlepoint 60. Further heavy fails of snow have occurred on the ranges and foothills in both Islands, and in many places there have been severe frosts. The anticyclone is centred today over the Tasman Sea and extends on to New Zealand, but pressure is falling again over eastern Australia. The maximum and minimum temperatures on Saturday were 46.5 and 38.3 degrees respectively, and on Sunday 45 and 35.8 degrees. The weather this morning was in marked contrast, the sun shining brightly with I very little wind or cloud. The weather in Christchurch remained cold and changeable throughout the weekend, with frequent showers of rain, hail, and snow. There was a strong and squally south-westerly wind and temperattires were very cold, the maximum and minimum on Saturday being 46.8 and 32.3 degrees, and on Sunday 40.8 and 33.7 degrees. On each night there was a hard frost, the grass minimum on Saturday night falling to 24.9 degrees, and to 25 de- | grees last night. It was fine this morning with a cold south-westerly breeze. Dunedin had very unpleasant [weather, too, there being frequent showers of rain, hail, and snow which totalled 83 points of rain. Skies were overcast, and a strong and squally south-westerly wind persisted throughout the weekend. Temperatures were very cold, never rising above 42 degrees. The weather this morning, however, was fine, although a cold south-westerly was still blowing.
