SATURDAY'S RUNS

Although a strong head wind handicapped ' [ tho University harriers considerably in • their 1 run from the Star Boating Club sheds, it was ono of the best runs of the season. No trail was laid, but a. course of about seven miles was followed around Oriental Bay to Roseneath and Evans Bay Road to Wellington Road. Thenco a return was made along the top of Mount Victoria and down Majoribanks Street. I)e Ia Mare was again conspicuous ln the fast pack, and gave what Is probably his best performance to date. Although there were only a few runners in the medium pack, they set a willing pace all the way, Henderson going ahead in the run-in to finish splendidly, b PRESBYTERIAN CLUB. j A run of 4% miles was held from the Kent '■ ; Terrace Presbyterian Church and was attended I by over forty members. A fast pace was j •maintained, particularly by the past pack, in I . view of tlie club championship race next Saturday. The run-in resulted: S. Campbell 1,1 K. Tomlinson 2, Norton 3. The race next Saturday is at Silverstream and the train will i leave at 3.22 p.m., leaving ou the return jour- j ney at 5.10 p.m. There will first be a junior i race (under IS years) over 3>i miles, ani I then the senior championship, of 6*4 miles, tho I winner receiving the Ferguson Cup. In conjunction with this a sealed handicap for tho Webb Cup is held. A social was held on Saturday evening to raise funds for the team shortly going lo Auckland. The hall and supper-room we're tastefully recorated in the club colours. Jlr. lav Purdie was M.C. " C.V.M. CLUB. Tlie C.V.M. Harrier Club held its weekly club run from Eastbourne. The trail of 4% miles led from St. Alban's Church, along Main Road, through Muritai Park, then via bush track, to Butterfly Reserve, returning via hill and Foley's Store. The club set out In three packs at a fast pace, and tlie intermediate pack was successful in overtaking the slow pack. Nest week's run will be from the V.M.C.A., Petone. BAPTIST CLUB. The Baptist Harriers held a teams race of 3% miles from Islaud Bay to Lyall Bay on 1 Saturday. There wero nineteen entries. A strong southerly made the going difficult, and the first man home was 50 seconds-behind last year's time. McFadyen and Tonson fought it out, over most of the course for flrst place, McFadyen coming to the front in the sprint up Onepu Road, 4 seconds in front of Tonson The results were:—o. McFadyen, 17min 50sec, 1; R. Tonson, 17min 54aec, 2; R. Wadham, ISmin 23sec, 3; D. Kltchingman, 18min 32sec, 4 Teams placings: Karori, 31, 1; Vivian Street,! 32, 2; Brooklyn, 37. 3. Last year's time, 3<min. WELLINGTON CLUB. The members and supporters of the Wellington Harrier Club were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. LaTsen, of Tawa Flat, at an invitation run held from their residence oh Saturday afternoon. Three large packs of runners followed au excellent cross-country course of six miles. The trail led the runners over the' surrounding hills, and in tho valleys several swamps and creeks had to bo crossed before tho runners reached the old railway cutting, winch led them back to Tawa Flat. The runners who performed well lv tho fast pack were T Strong, 11. Wakelin, W. Owens, and m the intermediate, pack, E. Chisholm. R Jones, aud C. McManus. A run-in was held over tho last half-mile, which resulted:—R aHs, a 1' G- K°wberry 2, C. R. Pocock 3, b. Willetts 4. The race next Saturday will be held from Brooklyn over a G^-mlle course, against the V.M.C.A. Harrier Club, Palmerston North, for the Robinson Inter-club Challenge shield. Tho V.M.C.A. Club- is sending down a very strong team, including C. Weller, the present Xew Zealand cross-country champion. OLYMPIC CLUB. The Olympic Club held a.five-mile run from Island Bay, finishing with a run-in, which was won by T. Watson, with L. Duignan second, and A. McLaughlin third. Next week's run will be at Northland. SCOTTISH HARRIERS. The Ballantyne Memorial Cup race held over ia o-mile course at Miramar on Saturday proved i a splendid contest throughout, and it was i fitting that the winner should havo been It. |J. Ballantyne—-grandson of the donor. Ballantyne was named after his uncjo, R. J. Ballantyne, who died of war injuries, and whose name the cup perpetuates. The course started irom in front of the tennis pavilion, and went down through the motor camp and back across the paddocks towards the oil tanks and then up the hill where, the going. was very heavy. From there it went ,to the road. Ballantyne took the; lead on gaining the road, and, with. Woodley and Kennedy, cracked on the pace home. Ballantyne won by about 10 yards from -Woodley, with Kennedy third. , Bruce ran well to make fastest time. A. .Bourgeois got second fastest, and Ballantyne third fastest. After- the race members were the quests of-Mr. W. Ballantyne, sen., president of the club, at afternoon tea, and Highland dances and bagpipe items gave a real Scottish effect to the proceeding. The cup was presented by Mrs. Silver, aud Mr. F. Silver spoke of tho history of the race. During the afternoon a presentation was made to Mr. T. Archer, who was recently married. He. was hon. treasurer for the club for some years. BROOKLYN CLUB. On Saturday the Brooklyu harriers were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. j". W. Moore, at Balena Bay. There was an excellent muster, and the course for the afternoon was of the hard-and-fast type—all road work, with a headwind the' first half and a tail-wind home, about G miles altogether. The packs took the trail, led by B. Rowley, A. Barclay, and R. Macgregor, and some good work was done as a training ruu for the club championships, which will lie held at Lower Hutt next Saturday. Of tlie slow pack tho runners who deserve mention are C. Muldane and C. Pearce, who tilled second and third place respectively in tho final run-in over the last 500 yards. In tho medium pack, A. Barclay kept his men well in check, and some good team work was carried out. B. McManus, P. and B. Anderson, and K. Headifen were among the eager ones on the homeward trip, and in the final run-in, McManus put up a great sprint to head off C. Muldane and finish first. The fast pack, consisting of Pedersen, Argue, Mac gregor,' Thompson, Moir, and Appleby, had to make tho pace all the way to catch up With tho medium ■ pack. Argue is running strongly this year, and has at last produced the sneed ho required to put him in the front rank —ho never lacked stamina. Pedersen has not been able to put in so much training this season, but he still keeps well up. Macgregor, Thompson, Appleby, and Moir should be well up in the championships next Saturday. Afternoon tea was provided at the conclusion of the run, and the club captain, B. Macgregor, and Mr. R. A. Wright, the club's patron, thanked Mr. and Jlrs. Moore for their hospitality during their long association with the club.
