W.C.0.8. AND EASTBOURNE

The Wellington College Old Boys-Eastbourne match, played on the Eastbourne Recreation Ground, provided disappointing football, due largely to the high wind and to the slippery ball after rain at the commencement of the j second spell. Old Boys had flrst use of the southerly wind but failed to profit from the advantage. ' Eastbourne had a good share of the game - territorially. Old 805-S endeavoured to make the game open but a lively defence, aided by inaccurate handling and numerous informalities, prevented them from capitalising their efforts. A penalty goal to Baldwin was the* only score in the spell. With the wind in their favour, Eastbourne was expected to pile on the points after half-time, but Old Boys, playing a much more aggressive type of football, quickly added a further six points, as tho result of two successful penalty kicks by Baldwin. Meanwhile tlie home team, led by Gill and Cheyne, were pressing hard and when Sanson kicked a penalty goal they played with any amount of dash. But. Old Boys came Hgain and during the last quarter of the game played their best football, the ball continually travelling along the line of backs. Burns was twice nearly through and Pocknall failed lo cross by a small margin, but the Eastbourne defence, especially of Archer and Sanson, prevented their line being crossed, 9-3 being the final score. .Mr. A. Hooper was Ihe -referee.
