I. ' HUNTING ROYAL AGAIN

iMore than, twice as well backed straight out as anything else in the, •^ibld, Hunting Royal finished too. solidly, for his opponents hi.the Crofton Handicap. However, his. numerous ,simporters' were far from confident •even of collecting a place dividend till tlie last furlong. »1 Hunting Royal drew No. 4 marble, bhi when the field were approaching the crossing to the straight he was out wide and well back. Even at the false rail he was making no impression on the leaders, who at that stage were Quilp, Rex Maitland, and Screen Star, in near line. But a bit further on he began to respond to very vigorous riding, and in the last half-furlong H. N. Wiggins lifted him along to gain the upper hand just off the post. He finished out on the centre of the course. Though Hunting Royal was not quite the good thing the betting made him appear, he won really well at the close and was still going away. He is now out of hack ranks, but on soft ground he should not be difficult to place.for further success in the higher grade. Screen Star, having his first start since winning at Dannevirke a week earlier, was best of the others. He was, always one of the leaders and also ran his race a good distance off the rail. Windsor Chief was just behind the leading line at the false rail and he finished a good third. Blonde Princess, though drawing wide, soon had a good position but she did not run ori quite as well in her previous winning effort at the meeting. The remainder, headed by Mother-in-Law, Conversion, and Joe Louis, were some distance away. Quilp and Rex Maitland, over by the fence, both shut up quickly, below the false rail. Gemara, caught^the tapes at the start and finished with it in her mouth.
