IS IT A BOOM?
BRITISH INDUSTRY
SALES EXPANSION
NO STOCK EXCHANGE RESPONSE
(By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright.) (Received July 10, 9 a.m.) LONDON, July 9. "Is it a boom?" asks the "Financial News," in drawing attention to' the excellent unemployment figures, the recovery in the steel, shipbuilding, coal, engineering, and textiles industries. The expansion in retail sales and the rise in rail traffic returns are also indicated. The financial journal above quoted further declares that the present, level of national output has rarely been attained in the past. But what is so mystifying is that there is no Stock Exchange or newcapital market boom; no bidding up i of commodities or rush to pile up stocks. On the contrary, there is a complete absence of confidence in the investment and commodities markets. This condition is due partly to "Hitler"; and partly to industrial inactivity in the United States; also partly to better. capital equipment in Britisbh ndustry, enabling the output to be incased without scarcity.
