LABOUR FEDERATION
ANNUAL CONFERENCE
Many remits are being dealt with by the annual conference of the New Zealand Federation of Labour, which opened in the Trades Hall, Vivian Street, this morning.
The national president, •: Mr. A. McLagan, who has held office since the federation was formed three years ago to replace the New Zealand Alliance of Labour, is presiding, and there are upwards of three hundred delegates. The proceedings are not open to the Press.
It is expected that the Minister of Labour (the Hon. P. C. Webb), who returns to Wellington from the South Island tomorrow morning, and other Cabinet Ministers will attend the conference. "
Last year's conference of the Labour Party .decided that all remits dealing with industrial matters should be referred to the Federation of Labour for consideration- and a report, a decision that will overcome unnecessary duplication between the two conferences.
The conference is expected to be in session until the end of this week. On Saturday the annual conference of the Labour Party will open.
The president welcomed the delegates and • declared the conference open.
Australian visitors present included' Messrs. K. A. King, vice-presiden^ and secretary of the Labour Council of New South Wales (fraternal delegate to the conference); T. Wright, a member of the executive of the Australian Council of Trade Unions; and W. Riddiford, member of the central council of the" Miners' Federation;
Recommendations .were passed relating to the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration "Act, the Arbitration Court, the Shops and Offices Act, the Factories Act, and. the Apprentices Act.
