KONNETA TO RACE

NEWCOMERS AT ELLERSLIE

(Special from "Early. Bird.")

AUCKLAND, November 25,

The Hawke's Bay sportsman Mr. G. D. Beatson was rather unlucky in his Waikato trip with Sternchase and Soho, for while they won £298 in stake-money for a win and two seconds, it might easily have been three wins. Sternchase lived right up to his reputation, and after he has got over his greenness he should be a topnotcher.

The race for maiden horses at Ellerslie on Monday is in the form of a handicap again, and another large field is certain. Among the likely newcomers are Corato and Silver Quex. The former was left at the post the first day at Te Rapa and then got away well on the second day to be in front until Sternchase got to him, and it was ho disgrace for him to be beaten by such a fine galloper. Silver Quex ran two solid races at Avondale for a second and a third, and this three-year-old sister to Round Up looks an early winner.

It was stated earlier that Konneta would be reserved for the Great Northern Foal Stakes after two hard races in the Auckland Welcome and Wellington Wellesley Stakes, in which she acted as runner-up on both occasions, but she was entered for the two-year-old event at headquarters on Monday, and it is possible that she will have another outing prior to the Boxing Day classic. She may be the best of the northern youngsters, although there is still plenty of time for a really smart two-year-old to make its appearance.

After his runaway win at Whangarei in very weak company, Oriental Bay was produced on the second day at Avondale, and in a very close finish he was beaten by Full Hand. He has a rather extravagant style of galloping, and once he gets over this weakness he will win plenty of races, for he is a fine type of horse. He may be produced in the Cautley Handicap, seven furlongs, at Ellerslie on Monday, and it will take something pretty good to beat him at this distance. Perillus and Gold Wings will be fresh horses under orders for Monday's racing at headquarters, and they may be prominent. The former showed up at Avondale and again at Te Rapa, finishing fourth at the latter fixture, and he may get his chance very shortly. Gold Wings, was third in the two-year-old event last Monday and was running on.
