"ONLY A RUMOUR"
MATSON LINE STORY
(By relegrapb—Press association.)
AUCKLAND, This Day.
"That is merely rumour and has no foundation whatever in fact," said Mr. H. N. Thomas, passenger manager for the Matson Line, when interviewed on board the Mariposa today regarding published reports of the company's intention to replace the Mariposa and Monterey with new and larger vessels. .
"The present two ships are adequate for the business offering and larger ones are not required," he said. "When they become necessary we will build them."
He added that while business had progressed continuously since the company inaugurated the service the absorption point had by no means been reached. The passenger route had proved popular owing to its favourable geographical position and climate and there was no reason why the number of passengers carried should not continue to grow.
