WOMEN'S CRICKET

Women's cricket in Wellington was advanced a further stage last Saturday when the second matches of the series were played. Despite the heavy rain during the week, the grounds were in fairly good condition except at Emerson Street, where the grass in the outfield was so long that only one boundary was scored all day. The surprise of the day was the defeat of Kilbirnie at the hands of Trinity. Trinity are a well-balanced team and possess a very good wicketkeeper in Miss Shirley Hopley. Kilbirnie were without the services of their captain/ Miss H. Ashehden, who stood down in order to give new members a chance. Kilbirnie's fielding was very sound, some very difficult chances being held. Trinity were also good in this resepct. Miss E. Dumbleton played a-faultless innings for Kilbir--1 nie.

On the same ground Technical Day Girls secured a good-win. over the new club, Midland, which, however, played better cricket than on the previous Saturday, the presence of Miss J. Rowberry making a difference to the side. It is difficult to understand why a player of her ability should go in last.

It seems as if the intermediate competition section will prove very interesting this season. The standard in the grade is improving, and EJutt United. Trinity, Technical Day Girls, and Kilbirnie have players of unusual ability. Y.W.C.A. and Wellington have good coaches, and in a couple of seasons should come up to the standard of the two leading teams in the grade.

The usual Christmas-New Year tour of the Nelson-Motueka district will be undertaken by a band of Wellington cricket enthusiasts. Nelson has readily accepted a match with the tourists for January 2 and 3. The tour is regarded as one of the most enjoyable which comes the way of Wellington players.
